FIRE LIEUTENANT JASON MENARD

WORCESTER FIRE DEPARTMENT, MA
END OF WATCH: NOVEMBER 13, 2019

MENARD TOO ON MORE THAN JUST THE DUTIES OF JAKE AT THE STATION. HE BECAME AN ORGANIZER. WHEN GIFTS NEEDED TO BE BOUGHT, WHEN A FELLOW FIREFIGHTER WAS GETTING PROMOTED AND NEEDED A NEW WHITE HAT, "JAY" WAS ON IT. HE TOOK THE ROLE ON SO MUCH THAT WHEN MENARD WAS PROMOTED TO LIEUTENANT IN OCTOBER 2018, HE HAD TO BUY HIS OWN HAT.
MENARD'S LIFE WAS CUT SHORT WEDNESDAY MORNING. HE AND FELLOW MEMBERS OF THE MCKEON ROAD FIRE STATION'S LADDER 5 COMPANY RAN INTO 7 STOCKHOLM ST. AS FLAMES STARTED TO CONSUME THE THREE-DECKER ON ONE OF THE COLDEST NIGHTS OF THE YEAR.
WITH REPORTS OF A MOTHER AND BABY TRAPPED INSIDE, MENARD AND THE CREW BEGAN A FRANTIC SEARCH. BUT WHAT THEY DIDN'T KNOW AT THE TIME WAS THAT THE TWO RESIDENTS GOT OUT BEFORE FIREFIGHTERS HAD RUN INSIDE. THE BLAZE OVERTOOK THE THIRD FLOOR. MENARD HELPED A FELLOW FIREFIGHTER TO THE STAIRS. THEN, AS THE FIRE INTENSIFIED, HE PUSHED FIREFIGHTER CHRIS PACE OUT THE WINDOW, A FALL THAT LEFT PACE INJURED, BUT STILL ALIVE.
DURING HIS FUNERAL, FIREFIGHTERS AND CITIZENS HONORED MENARD, WHO WORCESTER FIRE DEPARTMENT CHAPLAIN, THE REV. WALTER RILEY, SAID HAS BECOME AND APOSTLE OF THE CITY, ALONG WITH THE FIREFIGHTERS WHO MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE BEFORE HIM. BEYOND THE WALLS OF THE FIREHOUSE, MENARD WAS A DEVOTED DAD, A LOVING HUSBND TO HIS HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEART. HE AND TINA MENARD MET AT DOHERTY MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL, WHERE THEY GRADUATED IN 1999. THEY WENT ON TO HAVE THREE CHILDREN, JOSH, HAILEE AND MORGAN.
